A Steady Light

A Flashing Light
A flashing light is serious. It usually means the engine is misfiring. Unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part to replace. Why a Code Reader Is Not a Diagnosis
Every car sold in the US since 1996 has a computer port that stores trouble codes. A code reader can pull those codes in a minute. The problem is that a code tells you where to look, not what to replace. One oxygen sensor code, for example, can be caused by a bad sensor, a vacuum leak, a wiring fault, or a fuel problem.
Many drivers buy the part the code names, the light comes back, and they have spent money without fixing anything. We use the code as the starting point, then test to confirm the cause.
Common Reasons a Check Engine Light Comes On
- Loose or worn gas cap. A cap that does not seal lets fuel vapor escape and can turn the light on.
- Oxygen sensor problems. These sensors help the engine use the right amount of fuel. A bad one can lower your gas mileage.
- Spark plugs and ignition coils. Worn plugs or a failing coil cause misfires, rough idle and loss of power.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
